From lowering your inflammation and stress levels, to boosting your creativity, the benefits of self care are countless. It’s important to set aside some regular quiet time for yourself so that you can recharge and have the energy to show up in the world as your best self. Let’s face it, it’s virtually impossible to authentically connect and pour out to others when we’re feeling depleted or running on fumes.  One of my favorite ways to have a self care day is by turning it into my own personal mini spa experience. 

My self care day checklist includes taking the time to light a candle, playing some relaxing music, and putting away my phone. The opportunity to disconnect from the world, detox from social media and the news is one of the many benefits of having your own self care day! Self care can also boost your mood and mental health by allowing you the opportunity to relax and let go of stressors — something most of us could use more of these days. 

While I’m unwinding, I like to round up some of my favorite non-toxic products, which I’ve included below—everything from relaxing CBD bath soaks, serums, masks, and Allure Magazine Best of Beauty award winners. I personally use naturally derived products that are healthy for the skin (and skin microbiome) and nourishing to your body. I hope you’ll incorporate them into your own self care routine and you love them as much as I do!

While you don’t need all of these items, I wanted to share some of my favorite spa day accessories.

Exfoliate Your Skin

It feels so good to refresh your skin with a little exfoliation. Two of my favorite products use chemical exfoliation rather than physical exfoliation, which means that they use ingredients like glycolic acid and caviar lime to dissolve away dead skin cells and sebum (a process that slows down as we age). I like to use these to start off my self care day with a fresh canvas before I apply other nourishing masks.

Exfoliation tip: Make sure to use them on your neck, décolleté, and the back of your hands for added anti-aging benefits!

Put on a Face Mask and Relax

While you let the face mask do its magic, take a moment to close your eyes and breathe deeply or meditate. Apps like Calm and Headspace provide guided meditations, which can help relax and clear your mind. And you don’t need a whole evening to dedicate to self care if you don’t have time. Choose a 10-minute meditation session while you let your mask do its magic and have a small moment of self care every day.

Beauty tip: Choose a mask based on your skincare needs at the moment. I love using these three masks depending on if I feel my eyes need a boost, or whether my skin needs detoxing or exfoliation.

Take a Bath

There is just something so luxurious about taking a bath! That’s especially true when you add in detox salts, essential oils, and soaks. Keep a few on hand so you can customize your bath to your needs and mood. Bath soaks with CBD in them can be really helpful for relieving aches and pains and relaxing muscles. Others, like the G.Night Soak from Goop, are best used at night when you want to prep your body for sleep. While bathing, put on some relaxing music and light some candles to make the experience more relaxing.

Care for Your Body

Taking the time to listen to and care for your body is important during a self care day (though I’d argue it’s important every day). It feels really good to start with exfoliation and then follow up with a moisturizer, not only because you’re taking the time to appreciate your body, but also because it will leave it feeling silky smooth! While showering or in the bath, polishes and scrubs keep the skin soft. After a bath it’s important to keep the skin hydrated with something rich like a body butter. When you rub scrubs and lotions into the skin, take a moment to feel gratitude for your body and everything it does for you every day!

Facial Treatments and Serums

As the last step in my self care spa day, I like to apply serums and oil to my skin and let them sink in for the rest of the night. Again, this is where you can customize your routine to what your skin needs at the moment. I like to take time to apply a serum to my eye area, as well as a vitamin C serum to brighten skin tone. Oils seal everything in and feel opulent to apply—the retinol oil below helps keep skin youthful, while the Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil keeps skin supple and healthy!

Beauty tip: Use tools like a jade roller to massage in serums and oils for extra penetration and self-love.
