The Benefits of Using a Facial Scrub
Incorporating a facial scrub into your routine is not only relaxing, but it has some real benefits. Facial scrubs work by exfoliating skin and increasing cell turnover, a natural process that can slow as we age. By exfoliating regularly with a scrub, you’ll help the process by removing dead skin cells that can build up and make skin look dull, trap oil and clog pores, and make fine lines look more severe. Facial scrubs smooth and brighten skin, and make it easier for your other products—like moisturizers and serums—to penetrate skin more deeply.
But on top of these benefits, facial scrubs are fun to use! Think of it as time just for you, and savor in the moment to massage your skin and care for it.
How to Find the Right Scrub For Your Skin
There are a lot of different scrubs to choose from, and what you choose ultimately depends on your skin type. Normal, dry, or oily skin types may see benefits from daily use, or your skin may prefer just a couple times per week. Those with sensitive skin may see the greatest benefits from just once-a-week use. And of course, it depends on the abrasiveness of the scrub—the more abrasive, the more time your skin needs to regenerate between uses. Be sure to be careful with your skin, erring on the side of caution while you learn how your skin reacts to facial scrubs.
Personally, I love to use scrubs in the shower because the warmth and steam helps to open up your pores—it’s a tip a dermatologist suggested to me years ago.
Tried and True Facial Scrubs You’ll Love
Acure’s Brightening Facial Scrub
This Allure Best of Beauty Winner is a great overall scrub that I reach for regularly. It’s great for all skin types, but it’s especially useful for anyone with dull skin who wants to add a little more glow. The sea kelp and french clay work together to clean, soften, and detox skin, and the formula is completely vegan, and paraben- and sulfate-free.

Acure’s Radically Rejuvenating Facial Scrub
Another scrub in Acure’s line is this gentler option made with Moroccan red clay and rose oil to rejuvenate aging skin. The formula includes antioxidants that fight against free radicals (which can cause wrinkles and discoloration) while removing impurities. It exfoliates and smooths using black jojoba beads, which is gentler than other options. Like the Acure’s Brightening formula, this one is vegan, and paraben- and sulfate-free. If you like the smell of rose, you’ll love using this facial scrub!

Derma E Anti-Wrinkle Scrub
I love this creamy scrub because it is gentle enough for my sensitive, redness prone skin. Like the name states, this facial scrub is specially formulated to smooth away wrinkles with the addition of vitamin A and glycolic acid. While the glycolic acid acts as a chemical exfoliant, apricot seed powder provides that physical exfoliation that makes skin immediately feel soft and smooth.
It’s safe to use too—not only is is vegan and cruelty-free, it’s free of a lot of other ingredients we don’t want in our skincare: There are no parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oils, phthalates, or sodium lauryl sulfates.

Derma E Microdermabrasion Scrub
This Derma-E facial scrub exfoliates skin with finely grained volcanic sand and dead sea salt, while astringents like lemon and lime peel (and antioxidants grapeseed oil and vitamin E) help repair skin. This is a great choice for a more intense exfoliation, as it will help smooth fine lines and remove acne scars.
Like the other scrubs on this list, it has an all natural ingredient list free of unhealthy additions.

Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub
Yet another option from Derma E—they are just that good—is this gentler facial scrub that can be used every day if your skin tolerates it well.
It also has a long list of ingredients that put minerals into skin while removing toxins. Activated charcoal acts as a detoxer, lifting away impurities that can build up on your face after a long day. Seaweeds like wakame and bladderwack, apricot seed powder, and green tea work together to hydrate and protect skin.
This facial scrub is especially good for oily skin, those who live in cities, and those who workout often. Even sensitive skin should be able to handle this formula though, as it uses minimal ingredients and is allergy tested.
